Club League race 7 - CP, Kinnegad Circuit: Hilltop Finish

So, the final round of the 2013 league came down to this last race to decide the overall winner, and see who would be crowned Club League Champion for 2013.

The weather was perfect for the race, we had a great team of marshals and helpers, course was swept and marked - all ready for a great night's racing ahead.

Very special thank you to the great Jonathan Ryan for his fantastic work with the groupings and handicaps.  We would be lost without his help, and his super-fast calculations on the night in trying to balance out the different groups.  Great job Jonathan!!!

First group off was Marcella McKeown and Mary Burke.  After one lap Mary had to retire, and Marcella was left then out in front to hold off the charge from all the chasing groups.

Scratch group worked hard to take back the 1.5mins they had on the Semi-Scratch group (who in turn were working very well together to reel in the semi-limit group ahead of them).  On the first lap, on the straight bog-road to Milltownpass, the semi-scratch group could see the group ahead, and the group behind....each closing in hard on the other!

Semi-Scratch lost 2 riders after the turn out of Milltownpass, so were down to just three riders.  Scratch were still at full strength, and full tilt....the chase was on big-time.

Up the bohereen to the old N4 at the end of the first lap, the semi-scratch and scratch groups merged, and then very quickly closed the gap on the front groups on the final lap and run in towards the finish.

Up ahead, Marcella put in a huge effort to hold off the chasing groups, and continued her great solo effort all the way to the line, staying clear to take the win on the night - great performance by Marcella, who picked up her second win in a row!!

Next group in were two stars for the future...youngsters Jonathan Nangle from Trim CC and our own Tiernan McCloskey then took 2nd and 3rd place respectively.

Hot on their heels then came the big peleton, with all three title contenders in it.  The bunch sprint for 4th place on the night was taken by a very powerful effort from Jacob Baldwin.  Next then was Joe Carroll from Sidebrook, followed in by Alan Maye.
Young Michael Kane finished safely in the bunch, so that was the 3 overall contenders over the line.

Now it was time for some mental arithmetic and post-race analysis!!!

Back at the Hilimar, the spreadsheets were working overtime to calculate the final standings, but we all knew in our heads who the winner was!!

So, congratulations from everyone at Clonard Road Club to our new 2013 League Champion, Michael Kane!!

Michael had a great league, and clocked up: 1 win, a 3rd place, a 4th place, and one 6th place to finish the league with a very impressive total of 90 points.

Just behind Michael, on 88 points, with 2 wins and a 3rd placing, was Jacob Baldwin.

Alan Maye then leapfrogged right up to 3rd place overall, just one single point behind Jacob.

We would like to say a special thank you to all the people who took part in the league this year: all the marshals, helpers, riders, and of course the visiting riders from Trim CC, Tri & Run, Sidebrook, and Team 905 from Edenderry for making it a great success.

One last special thank you goes to the great Michelle Kavanagh for providing us, race-after-race with excellent photos, and also for somehow then magically making it back to the finishline before everyone else so that we had photos of everyone finishing, and therefore were able to actually figure out who finished where - this would be an impossible job without Michelle.

Here are the results for the night:

The final round of this years Club League returns to the Kinnegad Circuit again, and will take place on TUE 27th AUGUST, at 7pm.

                                                    *** NOTE ***

***************************************
As the evenings are closing in fast, it is crucial that we start on time for this race.
Therefore:

Sign-On will open at 6:15pm,

and WILL CLOSE AT 6:45pm sharp.

All riders can then make their way to the start location (see below) from 6:45pm.

***************************************

Race details:

This time we will finish in the opposite direction to the previous time we used the circuit - and we have a slight uphill finish.  Course details can be found below.

First group will be off at 7pm sharp, so please ensure you arrive in good time to sign on, and allow the marshaling team time enough to fit everyone into groups and 'make the calculation' as the man said, to time the gaps between each group.

Sign-On is at the Hilimar Hotel in Kinnegad village - if you are driving there, please go to the REAR of the Hotel, then go up the ramp to the top of the car park, as this is our designated area for parking.

Sign-On will be from 6:15pm.

Don't forget the 2-euro sign-on fee!  This is just to cover the cost of the prizes and the food after the race.

We will roll out then to the Starting point, which is just opposite the Kilucan Road Junction, as you leave Kinnegad on the old N4 Sligo Road.

Below are the course details:

Each full lap of circuit         = 14.5km (x2 laps)
Start line to start of 1st lap = 3km (just over)
Last junction to finish         = 1km (just under)

TOTAL = 33km

Starting from the Kilucan Rd junction, head out the old N4 towards Corelstown.
Turning left after the little shop, and straight all the way to the end of that road, which brings you to the old N6 Galway Rd.
Turning left there, heading back towards Kinnegad, then left up the narrow road (CAUTION HERE!!!!!) which is the last left turn before coming to the old Apollo Garage.
At the top of that narrow road, we turn left out on to the old N4 road heading out again towards Corelstown to start the second lap.

On your 2nd approach to the junction onto the old N4, you come out of this junction, turning RIGHT this time, to the finish approx 1km from there.

uphill sprint

The league table after the last round can be found HERE.

Don't forget that EVERYONE MUST MARSHAL ONE RACE!!!  There are only 2 races left, so if you are not on the Rota, but are taking part in the races, please contact the club email address (clonardroadclub@yahoo.ie) as you risk having your highest points deducted if you fail to marshal - anyone under 16 years old obviously cannot marshal, but if your parents can lend a hand on the night, this will be fine, but please let us know so that we aren't short on the night.

Please also check with the Marshalling rota in case you are scheduled to marshal this race.
!! Don't forget that a penalty applies if you haven't marshalled a race !!
