Club League race 3 - CP, Kinnegad Circuit
Round 3 of this years Club League took place on another new
circuit which took the riders around a 33.5km course. On
paper, the course looked fairly flat and harmless, however the
reality was something different, and all groups found the going
tough, with the drags taking quite a toll on everyone's legs by
the finish.
A great turnout again tonight, with 32 riders taking part, and
we welcomed guests from Edenderry 905, Lakeside Wheelers, and
Trim, all adding to the excitement of the race.
First of all, we wish to thank all the Marshals for their
excellent job - as always, without marshals we would not have a
race, and your contribution to the marshaling is critical to us
providing a safe environment for everyone to enjoy the race.
Also, special thanks to Michelle Kavanagh and to Donal Kelleher
for yet again providing superb photos of the night - this is
very much appreciated by everyone taking part!!
Group 3 were the ones on top form tonight, with the group
being very well organised and working hard right from the
start. They reeled in Groups-1 and 2 on the second lap
after Corelstown. Jonathan Nangle and Even Harris were
caught just before the group turned out on to the old N6 to head
back towards Kinnegad - both riders hung on to the group and
rode very well.
That left just 3 riders to catch heading in the old N6 - Gerry
O'Brien, Shane Walsh and Michael Kane. These 3 riders had
a minute lead at the turn onto the N6, but once the group had
them in sight, the gap came down very quickly, and alas they
were caught just 1km from the turn onto the Bohereen to head up
towards the finish on the old N4.
Luke McVeigh put in a powerful solo attack at this point to go
for the win. The group was split apart by his attack, and
Luke kept a 10sec gap right to the Motorway bridge, only to be
reeled in by a strong effort at the front from Michael Kane and
Shane Walsh.
Out on to the finishing straight, a group of 6 or 7 were left to
battle it out for the win. A minute behind, the scratch
group were still powering along with a couple of riders from the
Semi-scratch group (who were caught towards the end of the first
lap), but to no avail, as the gap was never closed, despite the
group coming home with a very respectable 39.5km/h average speed
(and some very tired legs!).
In the final push for the finish line, Jonathan Ryan was first
out of the blocks to start the sprint, and was holding good for
the win until yet
another powerful effort from Luke McVeigh
saw him not only close the gap, but surge past Jonathan to
take the win comfortably. Excellent performance by
young Luke, especially considering he was away on a solo break
3km from the finish! Third place then went to the
legendary Peter Schweppe.
Despite virtually crawling over the line in 17th place, the new
league leader going into the next round is Andy Flood, as he
finished one (CRC)place behind Jacob Baldwin to finish with 13
points on the night, taking him to the top of the table with 2
points to spare over Jacob, followed then by Joe Holton in 3rd,
then Shane Walsh and Michael Kane complete the top 5.
Luke's win takes him up to 11th overall, but remember that no
one from the top 7 placings in the league has been scheduled to
marshal a race yet, so this means it is all still VERY close,
with all to play for!!
Below are the placings for Race-3, and the league table after
round 3 can be found

old N4 Sligo Road.
Below is a map of the circuit, but here are the details in text:
Starting from the Kilucan Rd junction, head out the old N4
towards Corelstown.
Turning left after the little shop, and straight all the way to
the end of that road, which brings you to the old N6 Galway Rd.
Turning left there, heading back towards Kinnegad, then left up
the narrow road (CAUTION HERE!!!!!) which is the last left turn
before coming to the old Apollo Garage.
At the top of that narrow road, we turn left out on to the old
N4 road heading out again towards Corelstown to start the second
lap.
Next time round, you come out of this junction, left, to the
finish approx 1km from there.
