Club League race 7 - Final Round - CP,
Ballyboggin Circuit
The final round of the Club League took place on Tuesday 4th
Sept, and what a race it turned out to be, with a speed even
the Pro Riders would be proud of!!
Firstly we would like to thank everyone who helped out on the
night with Marshaling and lead cars and photography.
A very special thank you to our good friend Jimmy Connors of
SpeedyParts in Mullingar
for donating all the prizes for the race.
And thanks also to all of our visitors from the Mullingar and
Edenderry clubs for making the race even more enjoyable!
The battle for the title of Club League Champion 2012 between
Andy Flood (who went into the race holding the Yellow Jersey),
and Ger Dunne came down to this final race. Only 2 points
separated both riders, with Ger just needing a finish anywhere
in the top-8 places on the night to take the title.
There were of course, battles for 3rd 4th and 5th places in
the league, so as the great Sean Kelly would say, there were a
lot of people busy 'making the calculation' on the night! :)
Ger Dunne was in the 'super-scratch' group, along with newly
crowned Mullingar 2012 League Champion Micky Dan, and
Edenderry's Owen Lynch. Ger's job on the night was plain
and simple... catch everyone and win the league!
The group worked incredibly hard together, and had closed the
gap on the Scratch Group containing the yellow Jersey just at
the top of Ballyboggin hill - on the first lap!!!
They proceeded to plough on and had hauled in all of the
groups on the road (which meant closing a 10+ minute gap in a
24km race!) even before Ballyboggin pub on the 2nd lap!
The speed stayed very high right through to the finish, not
giving anyone an opportunity to break clear - so the
remainders of Scratch and Semi-Scratch all contesting the
uphill-and-headwind sprint to the line against the might of
the Super-Scratch group.
The race finished with Ger taking his 3rd league race win of
the season, closely followed in by Aaron Ronan for second, and
Jacob Baldwin in 3rd.
Owen Lynch and Micky Dan took 4th and 5th place, and the
yellow Jersey came in 6th on the night.
Ger's super performance and win on the night meant he soared
past Andy Flood to an unbeatable 99 points, giving him the
well deserved title of 2012 Club League Champion.
2nd place in the 2012 League therefore went to Andy Flood,
and the battle for 3rd, 4th and 5th places went to Jacob
Baldwin, Aaron Ronan, and Paddy Ronan respectively.
Congratulations to Ger! Well done on a superb league -
3 wins and a 2nd place!! wow!
Well done also to everyone who took part, and raced hard in
the league this year - I think we all agree the league was a
great success!
Course Details:
Race will leave Clonard (from outside Paddy's Bar), and go
across towards Edenderry. Turning left just after
Ballyboggin Bridge, up the hill, then turning left again at
the bottom of that hill (the 1st left).
Over then towards the old N4 (careful when turning out on to
this road, and be aware that TRAFFIC MAY NOT BE STOPPED, so
single-file is recommended, and you must stay within the
yellow lines for your safety).
Same again for the 2nd lap, but finishing this time at the
motorway bridge.
