Club League race 4 - time trial (handicapped)
The fourth round of the Club League was a 16k time trial, on
26th June.
Riders set off at 1 minute intervals on a fast route from
Kinnegad to Milltownpass on the old Dublin to Galway Road
returning on the same route to finish at Kinnegad.
The riders were set off in reverse order of the league table,
with the Yellow Jersey off last.
Everyone had a target of beating their previous times by as much
as possible to try for a win, as the race was using a handicap
system.
The times showed that some riders have made great improvements
over the past couple of months, and resulted in a great win by
young Brad Brennan, taking maximum points on the night, with a
3m17s improvement over his previous time.
Niall Slattery took second place, with a 2m57s improvement, and
3rd place went to Ed Walsh with an improvement of 2m43s.
Here are the results from Round 4, and the points awarded (see
below also for the times, sorted by fasted first (just for
curiosity!)).

The handicap system was the same as used by the ICVA - you are
racing against your previous recorded time (e.g in Round-1 of
the league), and whoever beats their own time by the biggest
margin is the winner. You can check your previous time for the
16km course
here
(or if you rode last year, but didn't take part in this year's
one, you can check your 2011 time
here)
Tips for warming up correctly can be found here.
Warming up correctly is very important, not only to get the
best performance out of yourself, but also to avoid possible
injury by trying to ride the race from a 'fresh', rested state
(see here
for some of the science behind it all).
