Aidan Crowley of DID/Dunboyne CC put in a masterful display last evening in the Enfield Grand Prix to take the win in a highly charged event over 66 kilometers on the outskirts of the town.
Admittedly the Midleton cyclist has had a quiet year by his standard, but he certainly pressed all the right buttons in an event organised by Clonard CC, supported by Sixt.ie and a record entry of ninety-three competitors.
It was also an evening for two members of the Clonard CC in the under age events. Both Justin Harris in the under-12 and Shane Walsh in the under-14 events laid down a marker for this progressive club for the future with wins.
On an evening when shirt sleeves were the order, the handicapper Alan Maye afforded the time of three and a half minutes between the scratch and the limit group and sandwiched in between was the A3′s.
By lap three of the six all the groups had merged and it was noticeable that the likes of Stephen Halpin Polygon, Arron Buggle Rapha Condor, Damien Shaw Aqua Blue, and Chris Reilly of Bohermeen were the quartet who made the junction to the leaders on the road who had been negotiating the course which was living up to its test of the competitors.
It was a helter skelter final lap with the key men playing pivotal roles in jockeying for position as the pace moved in to a higher gear.
In the end it was the colours of DID/Dunboyne CC in the frame of Crowley who strode home in the fashion of a champion.
“Yes it was a daring move to go for broke with 750 meters to go. It was a do or die effort and I realized that the speed was up on the N 17. Either I went for broke or just rolled in the bunch. All the top sprinters were in the group and I said to myself. It is all or nothing and thankfully I bagged number two win this season. Particularly this was sweet. As I have just finished the An Post Ras in reasonable condition. I took a few days off and believe it or not I was abroad and rented those city bikes where I just took in the breeze,” said Aidan.

I also caught up with Paul Kennedy of McNally Joinery/Swords CC and Eugene Murtagh of Stagg Cycles/Lucan CC. Both expressed a view that it was inconceivable that Aidan could hold out after making that move in the closing stages. The event was run off at a staggering pace of 45kmp. It wasn’t as if we were cruising around on one of the best days weather-wise,
