Massive turnout this year, with almost 300 riders from all
corners of the country, in what was a dry Spring day, turned out
today for the 3rd annual Ras Naomh Finian in the historic
village of Clonard.
This year, we had a new format which proved to be a great
decision - separating the different categories into
separate races.
First off were the A2’s,
with a small handicap ahead of the A1’s. Both groups
merged near the turnaround point in Kilbeggan, where we had 3
riders forged clear from the main pack. These 3 were joined by
two others on the hill out of Tyrellspass to form a group of 5:
Stephen Halpin, Edna Connelly, Michael Brady, Neil Delahaye and
Chris Reilly.
These 5 riders maintained the gap over the main field, right
through to the finish line, Stephen taking first place, and
taking home the Ras Naomh Finian perpetual trophy for 2012.
A group of 2 riders, one of whom was World Silver Medalist
Paralympic Damien Shaw from Mullingar chased hard all the way to
the line and also held off the rest of the field.
The winner for the A2 category was Con Collis from UCD.
In the A3 Race, the
field was well over 100 riders. Three riders broke clear
on the return journey and stayed clear to the finish line, with
the narrowest of gaps.
The group consisted of Ian Richardson, Liam Blachfield and Mark
Nugent, with Ian crossing the line to take first place.
The bunch gallop was taken by fast-finisher John Priest.
Last race off was the A4
category – a huge turnout here, with 110 riders, some
of whom were in their first ever race.
The bunch stayed together right through to the finish line,
despite the many attacks and attempts to break clear.
The huge sprint for the win was very tight, with riders all
across the full width of the old N4 road into Clonard.
Emmett Ronan from Barrow Wheelers took the hotly contested
sprint to win the race with Hugh Davis (Usher), and Aidan
McNamara (Tullamore) taking a very close 2nd and 3rd.
